Gerta Xhaferaj in Kunsttage Basel

Meet Gerta Xhaferaj (1993, Fier), an architect and visual artist between Basel and Tirana. Her multidisciplinary practice spans photography, moving image, installation, and sound, delving into urban transformation, memory, and the cultural identity of peripheral zones. Through projects such as Aesthetic Abortion, Once per Day Before Bed, and Liminal Hymn, Xhaferaj documents the invisible and endangered – lost homes, transformed emotions, threatened heritage – intertwining them with a poetic approach where the abstract meets the concrete, and the historical converges with the personal. At Kunsttage Basel, a festival that unfolds across 66 venues on August 29th-31st, she presents a practice that blends architecture with visual and documentary narrative, resulting in works that reflect on loss, resilience, and belonging in a rapidly changing world. A distinctive voice in contemporary Albanian art, inviting reflection on both the fragility and the strength of urban identity.
